East Bay Environmental Training Program � The East Bay Environmental Training program is a six-week immersion course designed to provide participants with a sustainability and justice framework for understanding local and global environmental issues. The course will introduce participants to the urban environment of the East Bay, as well as to local organizations and people active in social change work. Sessions will include presentations by speakers, as well as field trips, discussions, course readings, student projects, and an evening film series. The course begins with an introduction to ecology, environmental justice, sustainability, and environmental health. Subsequent session topics will include food and agriculture; water; air and toxics; waste and consumerism; energy, transportation, and global warming; housing, land use, and sprawl. We'll look at both the problems we face and the solutions people are working on or thinking up. Our hope is that participants leave having become activated, inspired, and better equipped to engage as advocates for protecting and restoring the environment and its people. Call to reserve a spot! Workshop: "Home Greywater" � Learn about and help create the first permitted residential greywater system at the Berkeley Ecohouse. Learn about the principles and process of safely irrigating with waste water. Teacher; John Russell, greywater designer. Hand's on: bring gloves. A San Francisco native, Dowd is a radical economist, economic historian, currently a professor at two universities in Italy, the author of more than a dozen books, and lifelong political activist. Workshop: "Build Your Own Earth Oven" � Earth ovens (or hornos) are a great introduction to building with earth, using age-old techniques and simple materials such as clay, sand, straw and bricks. Long-lasting wood-fired earth ovens make the most delicious breads and pizzas. Teachers (or anyone interested in building your own earth oven) will experience a hands-on simulation of guiding students through an earth oven building group project. Benefit Screening for Project Cyber Drum: "Venezuela Rising" � After the showing of the film highlighting Venezuelan grandmother and community organizer Gladys Bolifar and the mobilization of the Venezuelan people, there will be a discussion of the situation in Haiti. Benefit supports the Cyber Drum Project, a grassroots communication and training program on the ground in Haiti which will inform the international community about what is really happening following Preval's election. Action: "Call Andronico's Market on National Cage Free Call-In Day" � Andronico's Market, a grocery chain in the San Francisco Bay Area, claims that it promotes humane business practices. Since 9/11, the Bush administration has relentlessly invoked the word "freedom". The United States can strike preemptively because "freedom is on the march".
